Clinical Study of Fracture of the Tibial Shaft in Adult

Abstract
We have treated and managed one hundred and fifty three cases of tibial shaft fractures in adult in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Chungnam National University Hospital from June, 1972 to May, 1977.
Tibial shaft fracture is most frequent in long bone fracture, also delayed union and non¡þunionis apt to develop in tibial shaft fracture.
Recent most studies have been reported that closed methods of treatment are more efficient than operative means. But, there are many problems for treatment of tibial shaft fractures till recent day.
Author analysed 153 cases of tibial shaft fractures and following results were obtained. 1. The closed fracture were two times more frequent than open fracture, and fracture level here more common in middle third.
2. The average healing tine were 16 weeks in mild severity, 22 weeks in moderate se¡þverity, and 28 weeks in major severity grade of fracture. But there was not difference between duration and inethcd of treatment.
3. Delayed and non-union were more common in operative treatment. Of 153 cases, delayed union were 11 cases(7.2%) and non-union were 7 cases(4.6%).
4. Of 153 cases residual deformities were 27 cases(17.7%) and joint stiffness were 14 cases(9.1%) and more commonly developed in operative treatment.
